The Green in…戴贝琦 (Bei Bei) - Q&A

What’s your personal elevator pitch/introduction?

I am a researcher. Have spent the past few years studying Chinese young people at a youth insight firm enovate and now working at Ogilvy Beijing as Associate Consumer Insights Director. I love travelling and hearing stories from interesting people.

Tell me about an interesting green initiative you’ve heard about or worked on.

Last summer I worked on a research project called Green Gap (see video below) to identify the gaps between people’s claimed and actual sustainable behaviors in daily life in China. My co workers and I Interviewed 30 youth and young families in top tier and lower tier cities in China, in the end we learned a lot of interesting findings. The report Get Going with Green was launched 4 months ago by Ogilvy Earth and you can find it on their website.

How are you green in your daily life?

I always carry my designer shopping bag with me; I eat more vegetables than meat; barely waste any energy when I am at home; reuse paper packaging and old cloth to make new things; I am also thinking about getting a bike to commute when weather is nice.

How often do you think about green issues?

Almost everyday, I have been paying attention to green related news as well as following green activists and organizations on Sina Weibo.

Who inspires the green in you?

One couple who I interviewed in Shanghai for the Green Gap project . They are both well-educated and making decent money. However, they have the lowest utility bills that I have ever seen, they ride their bikes to work and refuse to buy a car, they reuse water from washing clothes to flush toilet, they recycle almost everything that they can including all of their baby products, they reused old batteries and made a LED light that can last for three years. I am amazed by how much they have done.
